Slow Moments and Big Moments
Day Four was a lazy one, and very welcome too.
I watched QPR (my team) on TV. Unfortunately, they got hammered 0-5 by a team heading straight for the Premier League. By the end, watching it from the comfort of home rather than trekking to the ground felt like a wise choice. It was a tough watch and a good reminder of what a team must aspire to to reach the next level.
Later in the day, I watched the FA Cup semi-final between Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, with Palace coming out on top. I always had a soft spot for them growing up, as my Dad used to work with the mum of one of their former players.
A bit of pottering in the garden rounded off the day nicely. It was nothing spectacular, just a good old-fashioned weekend slowdown.
Day Five was something else entirely.
My wife and I volunteered for Pancreatic Cancer UK at the London Marathon. It’s a cause very close to us as she lost her mum to the disease eight years ago, three days after diagnosis, and we try to support the charity whenever we can.
There was a real buzz on the train heading into London: runners, supporters, families, all full of energy and anticipation. Pancreatic Cancer UK was the smallest ever major charity partner at the London Marathon, but it was a massive opportunity for them to raise awareness on a big stage. They cracked it with an enormous sea of purple at various points along the route, especially at the finish line.
It felt good to be part of something positive. Simple and real contribution.
The day ended with a long dog walk that handily included a stop for fish and chips.
A perfect finish.
Lesson of the Day
Life isn’t just about the big milestone moments or wins. Sometimes, it is about slowing down, taking stock, showing up, and quietly and steadily giving back.
Growth happens in the small moments just as much as the big ones.
Please take my free ALIGN Scorecard to better understand your alignment. It is a structured self-assessment across six key pillars of life and leadership. It only takes five minutes to complete, and when you finish, you will be sent a personalised report that sets your baseline alignment.
